Civil Engineering/CET Student - Summer COOP

Introduction
 
Northec Construction Inc. is currently looking for Civil Engineering Students in University or College programs to support our summer projects in the province of Ontario. These students will gain on-the-job experience working with seasoned professionals in the mining and heavy civil construction sectors. These students will assist site management with field work, reports, data analyses and tracking, among other tasks, while developing their knowledge and understanding of the real life applications of their educational training.
 
Job Duties and Responsibilities
 
  • Assist Project Manager and Project Coordinator with overall project performance, including costs, schedule, quality, and project status;
  • Assist team members with various project tasks including researching, compiling, and evaluating project data, preparing reports, and performing engineering-related calculations and analyses;
  • Assist in planning and scheduling of construction activities;
  • Identify, develop and handle tools for tracking various data for analysis and metrics reporting;
  • Build and present summary reports, performance metrics reports, graphical representation and presentations, as required;
  • Work with the team to recognize and optimize current production;
  • Assist in tracking and forecasting job costs on a weekly and monthly basis;
  • Assist in field surveys using survey equipment for a broad range of field investigation programs;
  • Assist in material testing and quality control activities;
  • Conduct site reviews with a member of management;
  • Attend site meetings, as required, to discuss schedule and other concerns;
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Requirements / Aptitudes Required
 
  • Current enrolment in a Civil Engineering program (University) or Civil Engineering Tech program (College) at an accredited post-secondary institution, and returning to full-time studies after the work term;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, administration and organizational skills;
  • Detail focused;
  • Ability to effectively manage shifting priorities and deadlines;
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Proficiency with drafting software (AutoCAD, MicroSurvey) will be considered an asset;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate and work in a diverse team environment;
  • Required to be physically and mentally fit for work;
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is a strong asset;
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
 
Working Conditions
 
  • This is a work term of up to four (4) months, May through August, and meets the requirements for an approved coop placement;
  • Project site/field working conditions – may include isolated locations, long hours, day shift and night shift;
  • Rotation of 14 days on site, 7 days off site;
  • Travel is required;
  • Overtime as required;
  • Combination of sitting and standing for extended periods of time;
  • On-site project workspace of various conditions which may include temporary working facilities and exposure to moving, mechanical parts and vibration; high places, and various levels of outside noise and weather.
  • PPE required.
 
Security and Safety
 
  • Driving record check (abstract);
  • Criminal record check may be required of the successful candidate, at their own expense;
  • Fit for duty test, including a drug test, may be required of the successful candidate.
