Occupational Health and Safety Manager

Reporting to the Northec Construction Inc. General Manager and the Director of Health, Safety and the Environment, the Health and Safety Manager will act as an agent in charge of the implementation of the health and safety culture and accountability on all of our projects across Ontario

Responsibilities:

  • Support managers and project sites in the integration of HSE activities.
  • Train staff and workers, managers and supervisors to understand and respect the mandatory legal requirements.
  • Standardize working andHSE procedures.
  • Coordinate risk analysis meetings and HSE team meetings.
  • Support the implementation of the Health and Safety Leadership Structure (SL2S).
  • Recruit and supervise site prevention officers and advisors.
  • Analyze accident statistics, create or follow targeted plans, follow up on recovery plan, etc.
  • Support the managers in health and safety in the day-to-day management of various mandates (audits, reporting, management of incidents, standard operating procedures, etc).
  • Act as an internal project manager in the implementation of the pre-qualification in health and safety of subcontractors.
  • Conduct project visits, inspections, and audits to identify compliance with expected practices, as well as to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Make recommendations of accident and incident prevention to managers related to corrective actions required.
  • Control Health and Safety related documentation to ensure that it continues to meet current regulations.
  • Other tasks as related to this role and associated functions.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a College or University program related to Mining / Construction / Industrial / Safety (OHS, Technologist, or Engineering studies).
  • Experience on Mining / Construction / Industrial sites for at least 5 years.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer related business tools such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as other commonly used programs.
  • Occupational Health and Safety training related to applicable Acts and Regulations, and an understanding of the background related to the requirements.
  • Health and safety certifications including a minimum current NCSO certification, as well as the ability to achieve a Gold Seal Canadian Construction Association National Certification. A desire, serious ambition, and action plan towards achieving a CRSP, CHSC, or other senior OHS designation.
  • COR Auditor and RSO certifications considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively when working within teams.
  • Surface Miner Common Core (basic and specialty equipment modules), Supervisor Common Core, Train the Trainer, and company signing authority for Surface Miner program considered an asset.
  • Bilingual (English/French) preferred, with the minimum ability to understand spoken French.

Working Conditions

  • Office work related to document and program development requirements
  • Field visits to monitor, audit, inspect and correct conditions
  • Periods away from home can range from 1 day to 14 days per month
  • Work hours may vary based on project needs (or emergency response)
