Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic

Description :

Working under the Maintenance/Fleet Manager the Heavy Equipment Technician / Apprentice will be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of heavy equipment, including Excavators, Loaders, Bulldozers, Graders, Haulage Trucks, as well as support vehicles such as Fuel and Float Trucks.

Responsibilities :

  • Interpret work orders and technical manuals;
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions;
  • Perform preventative and breakdown maintenance;
  • Able to perform services on electrical, hydraulic, power train, suspension, brake and air systems on vehicles and equipment;
  • Lubricate, service, diagnose, repair, assemble, and maintain vehicles and equipment;
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and ensure that the work done meets manufacturers’ specifications and legislated regulations;
  • Adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components, or systems;
  • Complete service reports and other paperwork requirements;
  • Assist in scoping and planning of new work;
  • Conduct duties in a responsible and safe manner pursuant to Northec Construction’s Health and Safety policies and procedures, as well as OHSA regulations;
  • Effective communication;
  • Ability to follow direction and understand scope of work;
  • Perform other tasks related to this function.

Working Conditions :

  • Project site/field working conditions;
  • Isolated environment;
  • Rotation schedule (2 weeks in / 2 weeks out);
  • On-site project workspace of various conditions which may include temporary working facilities and exposure to moving, mechanical parts and vibration; high places, and various levels of outside noise and weather;
  • There is some risk of injury when working with heavy equipment and power tools;
  • PPE required.

Work Location :

  • Northern Ontario mine.

Qualifications :

  • Completion of technical training (Diploma or Certificate);
  • Apprentices - Registration with the Ontario College of Trades preferred;
  • Certified Mechanics - 421A Certification preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in mining and/or civil construction preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working on heavy equipment, including Excavators, Loaders, Bulldozers, Graders, Haulage Trucks, etc..
  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Must have completed Surface Miner Common Core Basic Modules.
  • Valid driver’s license with current abstract.
  • Valid WHMIS required.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Possess the strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment and work in cramped or awkward positions.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
