Description :

The Health and Safety Officer works closely with all levels of management and employees within the organization and office environments to ensure safe work practices and policies in accordance with Ontario legislation, Northec Construction’s Health and Safety Program, and expectations of the client. The Health and Safety Officer is Northec’s first line of defense in preventing workplace accidents and incidents.

Responsibilities :

  • Initiate, promote, implement and maintain health and safety projects and initiatives.
  • Update, maintain and present safety orientation and training for all new employees to ensure complete and effective understanding of potential risks and expected behaviors within the workplace.
  • Maintain and present safety orientation meetings and ongoing training for existing employees and visitors as required.
  • Prepare Safety and Health Committee Meeting minutes monthly, distribute as required, and follow up on all points to ensure matters are resolved in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Coordinate safety and health supplies by ensuring appropriate supplies are identified and purchased in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Monitor usage of supplies and identify inappropriate use, and respond accordingly.
  • Provide regular and accurate statistical reports on all medical aids, incidents and injuries, lost time injuries, health-related absenteeism and disability information.
  • Manage Northec’s Return to Work program on site, with assistance from site management and the Human Resources office, to ensure employee recovery and return to work.
  • Communicate to management as required.
  • Monitor and recommend corrective action.
  • Maintain Safety and Health bulletin boards.
  • Maintain records of all Safety and Health related training on individual employee files.
  • Monitor, update and communicate the Northec Health and Safety Handbook.
  • Conduct effective hazard analysis for all work areas.
  • Ensure Safe Work Procedures are current and complete for the project.
  • Conduct monthly safety audits, with assistance from the Safety and Health committee member from the department, and report on results.
  • Investigate accidents thoroughly and effectively, and then respond appropriately as required, including communicating to, training and following up with supervisors and employees.
  • Case Manager administrator for occupational and non-occupational injury and illness.
  • Diligently encourage and promote positive and effective employee relations through communications initiatives, coaching supervisors, providing counseling to employees and monitoring employee satisfaction.
  • Support and promote Human Resources department initiatives and provide assistance in the absence of HR personnel.
  • Conduct all activities and execute all duties with enthusiasm and a positive, results-focused attitude.
  • Support company initiatives and policies enthusiastically.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications :

  • Occupational Health and Safety Officer Certificate or equivalent is preferred.
  • Possess current First Aid Responder certificate.
  • Three to five years of experience implementing and promoting safe work practices and policies within a construction environment or similar.
  • Experience with disability management, accident investigation, workplace inspection and job hazard analysis is required.
  • Understanding of current legislation, Codes of Practice, Bulletins and other safe work practice requirements and recommendations.
  • Confidence, with the proven ability to build credibility and strong partnerships at all levels.
  • Very strong sense of urgency with proven record of following through to meet deadlines and commitments.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and effective time management with the ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidences and ensure confidentiality of information and records.
  • Complete proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other common applications.
  • Driver's License required.

Working Conditions :

  • Project site/field working conditions (mining);
  • Isolated environment;
  • Rotation schedule of 2 weeks in/1 week out;
  • On-site project workspace of various conditions which may include temporary working facilities and exposure to moving, mechanical parts and vibration; high places, and various levels of outside noise and weather;
  • Lifting or moving up to 30lbs may be required;
  • Overtime as required;
  • There is some risk of injury when working with heavy equipment and power tools;
  • PPE required.
